Yankees Shake Things Up: Land 16-HR Former All-Star, Give Up 102-Strikeout Gem!

In a bold move to fortify their lineup, the New York Yankees have pulled off a blockbuster trade, acquiring power-hitting third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies. The deal, reported by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, comes just a day after the Seattle Mariners ignited the trade deadline frenzy by snagging Josh Naylor from the Dodgers. With this trade, the Yankees aim to address their third base concerns while parting ways with two promising pitching prospects.

In exchange for McMahon, the Yankees sent left-handed pitcher Griffin Herring and right-hander Josh Grosz to Colorado, pending medical reviews. While McMahon’s 2025 season hasn’t matched the fireworks of All-Star Eugenio Suárez, his durability and contract through 2027 offer long-term value, unlike Suárez, who is a rental player set to hit free agency soon.

Herring, ranked as the Yankees’ No. 8 prospect by MLB Pipeline, is a dazzling 22-year-old lefty who’s been dominating at High-A Hudson Valley. A sixth-round pick from LSU in the 2024 MLB Draft, Herring boasts a 7-3 record with a sparkling 1.71 ERA across 16 starts. His 102 strikeouts in 89.1 innings highlight his potential as a future ace.

Grosz, also 22, was drafted in 2023 out of East Carolina and pitched alongside Herring at Hudson Valley. With a 4-8 record and a 4.14 ERA, Grosz has shown flashes of brilliance, fanning 94 batters in 87.0 innings. Ranked as the Yankees’ No. 21 prospect, he’s a raw talent with room to grow.

McMahon, a nine-year veteran and 2024 All-Star, brings a reliable glove and pop to the Yankees’ infield. Though his .217 batting average this season is a dip from his career .240 mark, McMahon has slugged 16 home runs and driven in 35 RBIs, offering much-needed power. His acquisition likely signals the end of New York’s pursuit of Suárez, allowing the team to focus on their postseason push.

As of Friday, the Yankees hold the first wild card spot in the American League, sitting 1.5 games ahead of the surging Seattle Mariners. With McMahon now in pinstripes, New York is poised to make noise down the stretch and into October.
