49ers’ Offense in Turmoil: Aiyuk’s Comeback Date Revealed After Devastating Watkins Blow

The San Francisco 49ers’ offense is facing a deepening crisis at the wide receiver position following a string of injuries, with rookie Jordan Watkins the latest casualty. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Monday that Watkins, a fourth-round pick, suffered a high ankle sprain during Saturday’s preseason loss to the Denver Broncos. The injury will sideline him for approximately a month, casting doubt on his availability for the team’s regular-season opener against Seattle on September 7, 2025.

Watkins had been poised for a significant role, showcasing his potential with three catches for 56 yards against the Broncos, including a 50-yard reception that sparked the 49ers’ opening touchdown drive. “It’s really unfortunate for Watkins to get that setback because I really believed he could have helped us early,” Shanahan said. “But he needed the practice to do it, to be able to help us.”

The situation at wide receiver is further complicated by injuries to key players. Star wideout Brandon Aiyuk, recovering from surgery in November 2024 to repair two torn knee ligaments, is not expected to return until around Week 6, according to Shanahan. Jauan Jennings, who led the team with 77 catches and 975 yards last season, has been sidelined since July 27 with a recurring calf injury. While Shanahan expressed optimism that Jennings’ injury is not “too serious,” he offered no clear timeline for his return, noting only that Jennings was “all right last year” after missing time with a similar issue. Speculation about Jennings’ absence being tied to contract extension talks was dismissed by Shanahan, who confirmed the legitimacy of the injury via MRI.

Adding to the 49ers’ woes, veteran wideout Demarcus Robinson is likely to face a multiple-game NFL suspension due to a DUI arrest, leaving him unavailable for the start of the season. The team’s healthy options for Week 1 are limited to Ricky Pearsall, Russell Gage, and potentially rookie Jacob Cowing. Gage, 29, has not played in a regular-season game since January 2023 due to a knee injury, while Cowing, another 2024 fourth-round pick, has been hampered by a hamstring injury since the start of training camp but is expected to return to practice this week.

With the receiver corps depleted, the 49ers are under pressure to bolster their roster. Shanahan acknowledged the need to explore free-agent options, with five-time Pro Bowl wideout Amari Cooper, 31, emerging as a prime candidate. Cooper, who posted a career-best 1,250 yards in 2023 but dipped to 44 catches for 547 yards last season with the Browns and Bills, was part of trade discussions with the 49ers last year. Another potential target is Gabe Davis, 26, who visited the team in May and remains unsigned after a 20-catch, 239-yard season with the Jaguars in 2024.

However, financial constraints may complicate matters. Despite having approximately $49 million in salary cap space—second-most in the NFL—Shanahan cautioned that the figure is misleading due to in-season bonuses and the team’s desire to roll over cap space for a tighter 2026 financial situation. “There’s a lot of things tied to that,” Shanahan said. “Who’s available? How much they are available for? And what the situation our team is in salary-cap wise and what we can do. We’ll always try to do the best, but you try not to just panic and do something to survive a tough situation at the expense of what would hurt you later.”

Beyond the receiver position, the 49ers are grappling with additional injuries. Safety Malik Mustapha and rookie quarterback Kurtis Rourke, both recovering from ACL injuries, share a similar Week 6 return timeline as Aiyuk. Pass rusher Yetur Gross-Matos remains on the physically unable to perform list with a knee injury, with Shanahan indicating a return is at least a week away after a disappointing workout on Sunday. Rookie cornerback Upton Stout (calf) could return for Thursday’s joint practice with the Raiders, while cornerback Renardo Green (hamstring) is not expected back until next week.

The 49ers made several roster moves to address their depth issues, particularly in the backfield. They signed running back Jeff Wilson, their leading rusher in 2020, who returns after a stint with the Miami Dolphins. Wilson’s addition comes amid injuries to Isaac Guerendo (shoulder), Jordan James (finger), and Ameer Abdullah, who was placed on injured reserve with a rib injury. The team also activated offensive tackle Andre Dillard from the PUP list, signed defensive lineman Trevis Gipson, and waived quarterback Tanner Mordecai.

As the 49ers navigate this turbulent preseason, signing a proven wide receiver has become a top priority. With limited healthy options and a challenging early-season schedule, Shanahan and general manager John Lynch face a critical window to stabilize the offense before the September 7 opener.
