BOMBSHELL: Shock salvation for Harvey Elliott as Aston Villa career is saved by extraordinary Liverpool loan loophole

Aston Villa may have slammed the door shut on any permanent £35m move for Harvey Elliott this summer, but the 22-year-old Liverpool loanee has just been thrown a dramatic lifeline that could transform the rest of his season at Villa Park.

The England Under-21 international arrived on deadline day last summer in a deal that was supposed to become permanent if he hit a set number of appearances under Unai Emery. With no recall clause for Liverpool and Emery making it crystal clear from the outset that he wasn’t part of his plans, Elliott was left stranded — stuck on just seven appearances all season, only two of them since the end of October, and staring at a wasted campaign.

But in a bombshell twist revealed by the Birmingham Mail’s John Townley, the entire permanent-trigger clause only counts Premier League games.

Elliott has so far made just four Premier League appearances. That means he can still feature in up to five more of Aston Villa’s remaining 12 league matches — and, crucially, he can play every single Europa League game Emery selects him for without it affecting the buy clause.

Villa are already into the last 16 of the Europa League and fancy their chances of going deep, with a tie against one of PAOK, Celta Vigo, Lille or Red Star Belgrade next. Suddenly, the door has swung wide open for Elliott to finally show what he can do on the big stage.

The news comes as a huge relief for the player who was crowned Player of the Tournament at the Under-21 European Championships last summer and looked set for a major breakthrough before being frozen out at Villa.

He is currently sidelined with an injury expected to keep him out for another two weeks and will miss Saturday’s Premier League clash with Leeds at Villa Park. Emery confirmed on Friday:

“He is injured now. He is not available because of injury. I was so clear one month ago. I think we must carry on, and of course, help him as much as we can. Then, try to make him feel comfortable here. He is going to be available more or less to play in Europe. We are now in February, trying to focus on the Premier League, trying to focus on Europe.”

Leeds interest also officially ruled out

Adding to the clarity on Elliott’s future, BBC Radio Leeds reporter Adam Pope has confirmed that a summer move to Elland Road is not on Daniel Farke’s agenda.

While Pope acknowledged Elliott’s quality and the fact he would improve Leeds’ squad, he stressed the club’s priorities lie elsewhere — specifically a top-class goalkeeper and a proven striker. Midfield is already well stocked with Sean Longstaff and Anton Stach tied down until 2029 and Ao Tanaka until 2028.

So while Elliott’s long-term future remains uncertain, this extraordinary loan loophole has at least saved his Aston Villa career from total collapse — and handed the talented midfielder a genuine shot at redemption between now and the end of the season.
