Brighton JUST FLINCHED. Liverpool didn’t. The €50M “BUNDESLIGA BOMBER” with 11 goals is NOW ONE STEP FROM ANFIELD.

In a significant twist in the summer transfer window, Brighton & Hove Albion have withdrawn their offer for 1. FC Köln’s teenage sensation Saïd El Mala, handing Liverpool a clearer path to one of Germany’s most exciting young attackers.

According to KSTA in Germany, the Seagulls have pulled out after Köln rejected their proposed €35 million all-in package. Brighton were reportedly willing to meet the player’s demands for a substantial wage increase, but they refused to stretch to the €50 million valuation firmly set by the Bundesliga club. Köln have since held direct talks with El Mala and his representatives to outline their position: they would prefer to keep their wonderkid, but if he departs, it will only be for their record asking price.

This development dramatically shifts the momentum. Liverpool, long linked with the 19-year-old, now find themselves in a stronger position. While Brighton had appeared to be frontrunners thanks to the promise of regular first-team football, the Seagulls’ reluctance to pay top dollar has opened the door for clubs prepared to invest seriously in elite young talent.

For Liverpool, the timing could hardly be more relevant. With Mohamed Salah’s long-term future at Anfield under scrutiny and an impending exit looking increasingly likely, the Reds have an urgent need for fresh wide-area production. El Mala, though naturally left-footed and thus operating on the opposite side to Salah, brings exactly the kind of dynamic, goal-threatening output from the flanks that the current squad has occasionally lacked.

The numbers speak for themselves. As of 27 April 2026, the 19-year-old has delivered a breakout Bundesliga campaign: 11 goals and 3-4 assists in 31 appearances (approximately 1,802 minutes played), making him Köln’s top scorer. His average FotMob rating sits at around 6.87–6.92, and he continues to impress with high-volume shooting — most recently contributing an assist and registering 10 shots in a 2-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen. He also remains a key figure for Germany’s U21 side, recently scoring in a 2-0 victory over Greece, with senior national team prospects rising ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Köln’s confidence in demanding a club-record fee is understandable. El Mala has exploded onto the scene this season, transforming from a prospect into a proven goalscorer in one of Europe’s top leagues. By holding firm at €50 million, they increase the likelihood that only clubs with genuine Champions League ambitions and financial firepower — such as Liverpool — will stay in the hunt.

Other Premier League sides, including Chelsea and Newcastle United, have now been mentioned as potential contenders following Brighton’s withdrawal. Earlier interest from Bayern Munich appears to have cooled or shifted elsewhere.

For Liverpool, signing El Mala would represent a classic forward-thinking investment: a technically gifted, direct attacker with proven end product at a young age. While he wouldn’t be a like-for-like replacement for Salah, he would inject pace, creativity, and goal threat into the wide positions — qualities that could ease the transition whenever the Egyptian king eventually departs.

Brighton flinched at the price. Liverpool, with their resources and project appeal, have no need to. The €50 million “Bundesliga Bomber” is suddenly one step closer to Anfield — and the race for one of 2026’s most coveted young talents has just intensified.
