Dallas Cowboys make shocking move by cutting two fan-favorite defensive players

As the Dallas Cowboys gear up for training camp starting July 21 in Oxnard, California, the team has made some surprising roster decisions that have caught the attention of fans and analysts alike. While the NFL spotlight shone on the Baltimore Ravens’ high-profile signing of free agent cornerback Jaire Alexander, the Cowboys’ moves, though quieter, were no less shocking.

In a bold decision, Dallas waived defensive tackle Justin Rogers, a former seventh-round draft pick in 2024. Rogers, who initially joined the Cowboys but was cut during last year’s training camp, had garnered a following among fans who saw potential in the former Kentucky Wildcats and Auburn Tigers standout. Many hoped he could develop into a dominant run-stuffing tackle. However, that vision never came to fruition in Dallas. After being waived, Rogers was not retained on the Cowboys’ practice squad and instead joined the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice unit. Dallas briefly re-signed him on December 19, but he did not see game action. Now, his second stint with the team has ended similarly to the first, with Rogers once again being let go.

During his four collegiate seasons across 43 games, Rogers recorded 77 tackles, including 28 solo and eight for loss, along with four sacks. Despite his college production, the Cowboys’ coaching staff evidently felt he did not fit their long-term plans.

In addition to Rogers, the Cowboys also parted ways with cornerback Luq Barcoo, who had joined their practice squad late last season. Barcoo’s departure further surprised fans who appreciated his potential as a depth piece in the secondary.

To fill the vacated roster spots, Dallas signed two veteran players: cornerback Robert Rochell and defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey. Rochell, a 2021 fourth-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Rams, brings a wealth of experience, having also spent time with the Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers, Green Bay Packers, and Kansas City Chiefs. Winfrey, a 2022 fourth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns, has played for the New York Jets and most recently the UFL’s Birmingham Stallions. Both players are expected to add veteran depth as the Cowboys prepare for the upcoming season.

While the signings of Rochell and Winfrey signal Dallas’ intent to bolster their defense with experienced talent, the decision to cut Rogers and Barcoo has left fans questioning the team’s direction. As training camp approaches, all eyes will be on how these roster moves shape the Cowboys’ performance in the 2025 season.
