IT’S OVER FOR KONATE! Liverpool ditch Konate for £34.5m Brazilian beast with Frenchman’s Anfield exit CONFIRMED

Liverpool’s defensive landscape is set for a major overhaul after the club confirmed Ibrahima Konate will depart Anfield at the end of the season as a free agent.

The 27-year-old Frenchman, who arrived from RB Leipzig in 2021, leaves Merseyside after five years and 183 appearances, during which he contributed to a Premier League title, an FA Cup, and a Carabao Cup triumph. Despite his physical presence and occasional moments of brilliance, contract negotiations ultimately broke down, paving the way for his exit.

With Virgil van Dijk also entering the final year of his deal next summer, Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes face the challenge of reshaping a central defensive unit that has been the bedrock of Liverpool’s success in recent seasons.

Bremer Emerges as Primary Target

According to reports, Liverpool have been preparing for Konate’s departure for some time and have identified Juventus defender Gleison Bremer as their top target to fill the void.

The 29-year-old Brazilian has established himself as one of Serie A’s most formidable centre-backs since joining Juventus from Torino in 2022. Known for his commanding aerial ability, aggressive tackling, and surprisingly strong attacking contributions, Bremer scored four goals and provided three assists in just 26 Serie A appearances this season.

Juventus, who will miss out on Champions League football next season, are reportedly open to cashing in on the six-time capped international for around €40 million (£34.5 million) — a valuation that falls comfortably within Liverpool’s financial reach. Bremer has been linked with Anfield in the past, and his profile suggests he could make an immediate impact in the Premier League.

Familiar Faces and Alternative Options

While Bremer leads the wishlist, Liverpool are exploring multiple avenues. TEAMtalk understands the club are internally discussing the possibility of activating their buy-back clause for former academy product Jarell Quansah.

The 23-year-old defender was sold to Bayer Leverkusen for £35 million last summer, but Liverpool retained a €80 million (£69 million) buy-back option that becomes active in summer 2027. With Quansah continuing to develop in Germany, sources indicate the Reds remain huge admirers of his long-term potential and are closely monitoring his progress.

Other names under consideration include Greek defender Konstantinos Koulierakis, who has been made available following Wolfsburg’s relegation from the Bundesliga. However, his potential arrival would carry higher risk compared to more established targets.

Liverpool have already missed out on one option, with Argentine Marcos Senesi agreeing to join Tottenham Hotspur.

A New Era at the Back

The departure of Konate marks the end of an era for a player who was once seen as the long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk. While his athleticism and ball-playing ability earned praise, questions over consistency and injury issues may have played a role in the decision not to extend his contract.

Bremer, by contrast, offers a more battle-hardened presence with proven leadership qualities in a top European league. At 29, he represents a ready-made solution rather than a long-term project, providing Slot with immediate defensive stability as the squad transitions.

Importantly, one key figure will remain at Anfield to provide continuity. Despite speculation surrounding his future, Liverpool have made it clear they will not sanction a sale for goalkeeper Alisson Becker this summer, prioritising stability between the posts.

As the transfer window heats up, all eyes will be on Richard Hughes and whether Liverpool can secure Gleison Bremer — or another high-calibre centre-back — to ensure the Anfield defence remains as formidable as ever in the post-Konate era.
