OFFICIAL: UNITED’S MIDFIELD PRIZE IS GONE. Berta STUNS the Premier League with a €50m MASTERCLASS hijack. NO MERCY.

In a dramatic twist that has sent shockwaves through the Premier League, Arsenal have pulled off a stunning hijack of one of Manchester United’s long-standing midfield targets. Sporting director Andrea Berta has moved decisively to secure Brazilian international Ederson from Atalanta, delivering a €50 million masterclass that leaves rivals stunned and with no room for negotiation.

The 26-year-old Serie A star, rated at €50 million (£43.6m / $57.6m) by Atalanta, had been widely tipped as a key part of Manchester United’s midfield rebuild and had also attracted serious interest from Newcastle United. Both clubs pursued him aggressively in the January window and were expected to renew their efforts this summer. Those plans now lie in ruins.

Berta, leveraging his deep connections from his time at Atletico Madrid, has moved swiftly to bring the dynamic midfielder to the Emirates. Atalanta were determined to extract maximum value in what represented their final realistic chance to cash in on the player, who is under contract until 2027. While Atletico Madrid were only willing to offer €35m plus €5m in bonuses, Arsenal had no such financial hesitation. The Gunners met the €50m valuation head-on, effectively shutting the door on their Premier League competitors.

Ederson to Provide Crucial Competition for Struggling Zubimendi

The signing is seen as a direct response to growing concerns over Martin Zubimendi’s recent form. The Spaniard has been the heartbeat of Arsenal’s midfield this season but has shown clear signs of burnout after an immense workload.

Zubimendi has racked up a staggering 3,574 minutes across 44 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal this term — significantly more than the 3,143 minutes he managed in 38 games for Real Sociedad at the same stage last season. His passing accuracy, once a rock-solid 89% from August to December, has dropped to 85.7% since the turn of the year. The dip was painfully evident in the Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City at Wembley, where he was virtually anonymous.

Ederson, with his high-intensity style, excellent ball-winning ability and tactical discipline, is viewed as an ideal stylistic fit for Mikel Arteta’s system. He will provide genuine competition and much-needed rotation options in the engine room, ensuring Arsenal maintain their relentless pressing and control even during a demanding run of fixtures.

Arsenal’s Treble Hunt Continues Amid Summer Planning

The move comes as Arsenal remain firmly in the hunt for an historic Treble. This weekend they travel to Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals, sit nine points clear at the top of the Premier League, and prepare for a Champions League quarter-final clash against Sporting CP.

While the focus on the pitch is intense, Berta has shown he is already shaping the squad for next season. By acting early and decisively on Ederson, Arsenal have demonstrated their ambition and financial muscle — qualities that their rivals, including Manchester United and Newcastle, simply could not match in this instance.

For United, this represents a significant blow. Ederson had long been earmarked as a priority target to refresh their midfield. Newcastle, too, will feel the sting after months of scouting and planning.

Atalanta, meanwhile, will bank a substantial fee, but they lose one of their most influential performers. For Arsenal fans, however, the message is clear: the club is not content with simply competing — they intend to dominate.

No mercy from the Gunners this summer. With Berta at the helm of transfer business, Arsenal have sent a powerful statement: their midfield is about to get even stronger, and their rivals have been left watching from the sidelines.
