Olandria Accuses ‘Love Island USA’ of Staging Scenes, Painting Her as Desperate for Taylor Williams

Olandria Carthen, the vivacious star of Love Island USA Season 7, is breaking her silence about the behind-the-scenes editing that she claims misrepresented her journey in the sun-soaked villas of Fiji. Captivating millions of viewers with her charm and bold pursuit of love, the Southern beauty ultimately found her match in cowboy Nic Vansteenberghe. However, Olandria now reveals that what fans saw on their screens was far from the full story, accusing the show of selective editing that painted her as a “desperate” romantic chasing after islander Taylor Williams.

In a candid interview on the August 27 episode of The New York Times’ Modern Love podcast, Olandria opened up to host Anna Martin about the shock of discovering how her portrayal sparked heated debates among fans. After nearly two months of being sequestered from the outside world, she emerged to find her character under scrutiny, with podcasts and social media buzzing about her dating tactics. “You get out and hear these podcasts speaking on my character, who they think I am,” she said. “I’m like, I am not this desperate girl. They were saying, ‘Olandria needs to look in the mirror and see who she is.’ I’m like, I do know who I am!”

Olandria specifically called out the show’s editing for exaggerating her dynamic with Taylor Williams, making it appear as though she was relentlessly pursuing him despite his disinterest. “I didn’t realize the type of edit that was put out, where it looks like Taylor was uninterested,” she explained. “There’s no way you think I’d get on national television, coming after this man, trying to get him to see me, like, ‘Choose me, pick me!’ Are you serious?” She firmly rejected the narrative, insisting that the reality was far more nuanced than what was shown.

The turning point came when Olandria’s mother visited the villas, delivering a blunt wake-up call that left her reeling. “Even when my mom came, she was like, ‘Girl, what the hell is going on with you?’” Olandria recalled. “I was so caught off guard because she could only tell me so much… I was paralyzed. My mom’s very blunt—she gives it to me straight. She was like, ‘Girl, you need to lock in, for real.’ That’s when I knew a weird edit was getting pushed. She said, ‘I know my daughter, and this ain’t you.’” Her mother’s stark assessment underscored the disconnect between Olandria’s reality and the storyline crafted by the show.

The model bristled at the suggestion that she was a “thirsty girl” desperately vying for Taylor’s attention. “I’m not this beautiful girl trying to get this cowboy to see who I am and choose me,” she said, dismissing the caricature. “I’m like, hey, I’m not this thirsty girl y’all think I am at all.”

Since wrapping the season, Olandria has been vocal about reclaiming her narrative, updating fans on how her life has evolved beyond the show. While her time on Love Island USA may have come to an end, she’s determined not to let the edited version of her story define her. By speaking out, Olandria is setting the record straight, reminding viewers that reality TV often blurs the line between truth and entertainment. Her bold stand is a testament to her resilience, proving that her character shines far brighter than any scripted storyline.
