The Minnesota Vikings are making a bold move in 2025, entrusting their Super Bowl aspirations to a 22-year-old quarterback who has yet to take a snap in an NFL regular season game. By letting Sam Darnold walk in free agency and not pursuing another starting-caliber quarterback, the Vikings are placing the weight of their ambitions squarely on J.J. McCarthy’s shoulders. For most teams, this would be a gamble steeped in uncertainty. But for general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and the Vikings’ organization, it’s a calculated bet backed by unshakable confidence in their young quarterback. And that confidence should send a chill through the rest of the NFC North.

McCarthy, selected tenth overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, is no ordinary rookie in the eyes of the Vikings. From the pre-draft process through the early stages of last summer, the former Michigan star gave the organization plenty of reasons to believe he’s ready to meet this moment. The decision to let Darnold—who led the Vikings to an impressive 14 wins last season—depart in free agency was a testament to their faith in McCarthy’s potential. As Adofo-Mensah explained in a recent interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune, that faith stems from both McCarthy’s physical talents and his exceptional mental makeup.
“It’s a lot of projection,” Adofo-Mensah said. “But it’s projection with other things that might be a little bit more known. With J.J., the bet has always been the talent and the football makeup. Football makeup, to me, is the gap. Anything that you think he can do and hasn’t shown, to me, the football character is what gives you belief to take that jump. That’s the jump that we’re willing to take in this organization.”
A Glimpse of Greatness Cut Short
McCarthy’s brief time on the field last year only reinforced the Vikings’ belief in him. From rookie minicamp to the early weeks of training camp and his lone preseason game, he displayed remarkable growth. His arm talent, pocket presence, and ability to quickly absorb coaching points were evident. Head coach Kevin O’Connell was so impressed that, even after a torn meniscus abruptly ended McCarthy’s rookie season in the preseason, he publicly declared the team had found its franchise quarterback.
“We had constant dialogue and conversations about what we wanted for J.J. that year, and he started exceeding them pretty quickly,” Adofo-Mensah said. “He was pushing a little bit, in terms of maybe even becoming the backup or different things like that, but just the day-over-day growth that he would show, he’s so coachable. You give him a coaching point, he’s going to go home and make sure that that coaching point is received.”
Though the injury sidelined McCarthy, it didn’t dim the organization’s enthusiasm. Over the past nine months, McCarthy’s response to adversity has only deepened their trust in him. He remained a fixture at the Vikings’ facility, soaking up knowledge, supporting his teammates, and attacking his recovery with maturity beyond his years. Since the 2024 season ended, he’s been a constant presence, preparing relentlessly for the opportunity now before him.
Building the Perfect Support System
The Vikings’ confidence in McCarthy extends beyond his individual traits. They’ve spent this offseason meticulously constructing a roster to maximize his chances of success. Adofo-Mensah emphasized the importance of surrounding McCarthy with a strong supporting cast, particularly a robust offensive line capable of protecting him and powering a dynamic run game. This setup, he believes, will create manageable down-and-distance situations, easing the burden on any quarterback—especially a young one.
“We think about the team around him, right? So how do we support J.J.?” Adofo-Mensah said. “We provide a really good offensive line in front of him to protect the passer, also be able to run the football and set our whole offense up in down and distances that make it easier on him and make it easier on any quarterback.”
Add to that the guidance of head coach Kevin O’Connell, whom Adofo-Mensah jokingly called a “QB Nobel laureate.” O’Connell’s track record of developing quarterbacks makes him the ideal mentor for McCarthy. “I think we have maybe the best QB incubator in the NFL,” Adofo-Mensah said. “And so, when you put a person in there with all that ability and all that mindset, I just feel so confident about what’s going to come out the other end.”
A Rare Bet on a Rare Talent
The Vikings’ approach is not without risk. A team with a loaded roster and Super Bowl aspirations hinging on a quarterback coming off an injury with no regular-season experience is, as Adofo-Mensah admitted, without a clear historical precedent. “There may not be a great comp for this,” he said. Yet the organization’s belief in McCarthy’s talent, work ethic, and character outweighs the uncertainty.
That belief is rooted in McCarthy’s relentless drive. “He’s going to go home, just like Kevin, just like myself, just like leaders in this organization, and give every single thing he can to the accomplishment of our goals,” Adofo-Mensah said. “And I can sleep at night with that. I talk about minimizing regret all the time. I am never going to regret going into battle with people like that.”
